Face Prints
A.I.R Gallery, New York

Press Release

September 14-October 9, 2004: A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to announce Face Prints, an exhibition of new sculpture, installation, artists books and video by Louise McCagg (511 W. 25th Street, Suite #301, Tues-Sat, 11-6). An opening reception September 16 from 6pm to 8pm will feature at 7pm a performance of the new piece voICE, a collaboration between the artist and the Garrett Fisher Ensemble of Seattle. The performance will be repeated September 17 and 18 at 7pm.

In one installation, nearly life-size aluminum profiles, previously installed as footfalls along a wooded path in an outdoor exhibition at Byrdcliffe in Woodstock, New York, appear on the wall alongside stream-of-consciousness drawings and texts on acrylic mirror. These drawings record the mental terrain of the physical walk taken in the Woodstock installation. McCagg also presents a book documenting the outdoor installation.

Face Prints uses several media and techniques to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Hungarian Jewish Holocaust. In one piece, bronze postcards scattered with tiny, reduced life casts of the faces of survivors of the Holocaust and their families. Likewise, the interdisciplinary performance voICE created by Garrett Fisher combines original music by Fisher with voice, sounds and movement by AC Petersen and life masks cast in ice by McCagg. The text of voICE was dictated by the S.S. for the Hungarian Jews in Auschwitz to send to their Magyar families. The postcards, putatively sent from the Austrian resort town of Waldsee, obscure the reality of concentration-camp life. McCagg also presents a related video.

Three videos are among the works exhibited: Core is a study of six personalities through extreme close-ups; Making the Mask; demonstrates casting a face in the midst of a farce; and voICE documents the three day performances by the Fisher Ensemble.

A.I.R. Gallery is located at 511 West 25th Street, NYC. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11am-6pm. For information please contact the director, Dena Muller at 212.255.6651 or
